Find your Passion...
I had quite an adventurous day today. Didn’t have much work today in office which was a welcome relief after harrowing weeks at work. We came back from a dinner with friends just in time to avoid the dust storm that’s blowing outside right now. I just saw the guard’s chairs go up in the air while they were trying to move base inside their little shed and the guard ran behind the chair-balloon trying to get his seat of power back (“kissa kursi ka…”).
Finally, weekend is here. I have lots planned up for this weekend (as always, I guess). The husband is teaching me to play squash. So, we head for that in the morning after some house cleaning work. Then, I plan to visit Faith’s women cell tomorrow or should I say today. The Faith’s Women cell activity that I have taken responsibility of warrants another post. I shall write about that soon. It’s been ages since I posted here. Have had a lot to write about but alas no time to do it. And I must admit I didn’t mind not having the time to think about the day. For a change, I guess. Had it carried on for too long, these long office weekdays and weekends, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it anymore.
So, I have been wanting to write about the luxury of time and how I do not have enough time to do all that I wish I could do at this stage in life. And I don’t mean do once in a lifetime. I mean list of things that I want to do right now, right at this stage in life. This one topic already has a post in draft state on my blog dashboard.
But, this post I want to write about (after much digression) about the much discussed work-life balance. I have come to the conclusion that either I do not like/love what I do or I just don’t have enough work or important work to talk about. I don’t find myself talking about my work too much. I don’t believe in working weekends and I want to really give a wake-up call to anyone who tells me they work weekends and enjoy it. Weekends are meant to be enjoyed. There is no point working over the weekend (unless of course you have something really really urgent to finish). In my opinion it doesn’t get you anything other than a sore back and a screwed up life.
People who claim to work 7 days a week (or even 6 and a half) are either really really passionate about what they do or just don’t have a life. You can love what you do and still love life too. The set of people who are entrepreneurs are maybe allowed these crazy hours cause they chose that lifestyle to build equity over the cushioned luxurious life of a salaried employee. The rest of us employed people need to loosen up. You don’t get paid to overwork yourself. I think it is counter-productive. And please don't work simply because you want to find a reason to stay out of home for whatever reason. There is so much to do in life other than work. So much to see and learn and explore! Find another passion (given work is your passion) and pursue that too. Who said you can only have one passion.
Life is too precious to be spent hiding behind the charade of how busy one is and how one’s employer would come to a total halt if work is not done over the weekend. You are only creating trouble for yourself in the longer run. You are telling your boss that you are willing to work weekends. And the day you realize you want to have a life, it will get difficult to change your boss’s perception of what you should do over the weekend. Don’t let anything –even a valid reason to get out of your house – drive you to office over the weekend. There are other things to do that can keep you out of your home and still keep you away from work.
Find another passion! Find a hobby! Find time for yourself! Get a life!
Have a great Weekend!
