To read the printed word or not...

So I came across this website 'ReadThePrintedWord' and have been thinking about this pledge for a while. I have had a ebook reader for a while now. I like the experience. But until a couple of days back I wasn't very convinced about which one I prefer - reading a real book or the e-Ink version of the book on the Amazon Kindle.

I love walking into book shops. I love the colourful, well stocked racks, the smell of a new book, the freshly printed no dogear marked pages, the creative book cover silently promising a journey into a new world.

Then why you ask did I switch to an ebook reader. My reasons to buy a ebook reader were simple. I have way too many books and stocking them and moving them when I move houses is a big chore. Also, I am a little fickle and easily distracted. I read 2 books at a time - one serious and the other a light (often racy) read. For instance - a biography of the legendary Steve Jobs along with the Immortals of Meluha. When travelling, carrying two books, not just because I want variety but also cause I might finish one and want to start another, is painful. (Yes - I am a control freak. :-D ). The eBook Reader allows that. The arguments in favour of the device were strong and the device was soon procured.

I have no complaints. The battery is amazing and lasts me about a month. The book reading experience is the same as reading an actual book. I have lots of books stored on it. Yes- it does cause more distractions cause I can be my fickle self and jump from one book to the other -but lets not blame the device for the fault is in the reader.

So why the post you wonder. Well, cause I wasn't totally convinced about an ebook reader. This week I got hooked on to the idea of reading the ShivaTriology. The digital version of this book isn't out yet and flipkart was selling it at a discount.
I have not read a hard copy of a book in a while. After reading the hard copy for two days - sometimes for a few hours at a stretch - I realised I prefer eBooks. The Kindle is just easier to hold, especially when reading late into a cold night, in the light of a lamp, trying to hold the book with one hand while sipping your coffee held in your other hand.

Voila! I have a clear choice now. I prefer the eBook Reader. No doubt the feel of a new book, the colors on the cover, the smell of the pages is divine. But the ease and comfort of holding the ultra light Kindle just beats the other factors hands-down.

I like this clarity of thought. It makes life simpler- Don't you think?

As a fellow Kindle owner, I would agree with you. I do love the smell of a new book, crisp pages when opened first time. Nothing beats that. But as you pointed out, its a problem stocking them. I wish I had a big mansion with a huge room dedicated to books. Rows and rows of nice wooden shelves loaded with great works.
But that's not the reality, and I am thankful to ebooks. At least I can read whatever I feel like without worrying where would I keep it.
Lately, I find myself buying a book only when its not available in ebook form or if the price difference is too much.

So yeah, ebooks it is.
Ebooks!!! Yay!
