Where is the world headed?

Cleaning my blogger account I found this blog post draft I wrote on Apr 1, 2009 and somehow never completed and published.
How relevant this seems even today, a little less than 4 years later. Wonder how long it will still be relevant!

Where is the world headed?
A six-year-old was raped by a 40-year-old man at knifepoint. Local police refuses to lodge a complaint. MP intervenes. Complaint is filed. After a few days this story is forgotten and becomes history. Similar one makes headlines. And history repeats itself yet again.
You need to pick up the morning daily to know what I am talking about. Every alternate day the front page of the newspaper carries a similar story. Father rapes daughter. Then we find 3 such pigs. Father/Mother kill daughter. Journolist killed for money. IT executive killed for money.
Is this how liberated and cultured and educated we as a society have become? We read these stories, express our shock and horror at them and then forget about them till we move on to the next topic of discussion. Is this how sensitive and cultured we've become? Would i react in a similar way if it were someone near and dear? Are these news headlines only good for having meaningful conversation with colleagues over coffee? Do we want to put our head in the sand and pretend like we didn't notice something bad happened?
