Can you be in love with two people at the same time?

The Encyclopedia Galactica, in its chapter on Love states that it is far too complicated to define. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on the subject of love: Avoid, if you are able to."

The last couple of weeks I've watched two similar movies that got me wondering if being in love with two people at the same time is something that is pretty common. I always thought that it wasn't possible at all. Infact, the part where Bella in Twilight realises in the eleventh hour that she also loves Jacob. Thankfully, she is able to decide before too late that she loves Edward more than Jacob and always makes that clear to Jacob. I'd have totally ignored anything twilight if even for a day she would have ignored Edward for Jacob.

I can understand that a person can love different people at different times. I can also understand that you are a different person with different people. What i fail to understand is how you can love two people in the same way? I mean, how can you be "in love" with two people at the same time and end up in a complete mess?

I recently watched "The Notebook" and "Sweet home alabama". Being a fan of chicklits, I obviously loved the two films. But both of these also made me think about the sweet charming man the actress chooses to *not* marry in the end. What had that guy done wrong? He charms the girl, is sweet and caring. He is trusting enough to let her to away to find herself only to realise later that he let her walk away from him. Yeah yeah, I've heard that one too... if you love someone let them free.... but wasn't she free from the beginning to not fall in love with this other man when she supposedly had left her heart with her husband/ex-bf.

Complicated!!!
